Tamko Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Most Tamko shingle repairs in Los Angeles run $380 – $780 installed, and we stock the matching shingles and underlayment on our trucks for same-day completion. Dylan Pace and our crew handle everything from cracked Heritage Series tabs to full ridge-cap blow-offs after Santa Ana wind events. If you’re seeing granules in your gutters or daylight through the shingle layer, the damage is already past the point where sealant alone will hold.

Call (325) 246-5075

We see this call most often after a homeowner spots a water stain on a ceiling in Encino or finds a handful of gray granules washing out of a downspout in Highland Park. Sometimes it’s the neighbor who notices – a few missing tabs on the street-facing slope that stand out once the afternoon sun hits them right. Either way, the fix is straightforward when you match the shingle line and install it before the felt underlayment bakes and curls in the L.A. heat.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s three residential lines – Heritage, Heritage Vintage, and Heritage Woodgate – each use slightly different tab dimensions and color granule blends, so matching matters. Heritage is the workhorse you’ll see across the San Fernando Valley: 39 3/8″ long, 13 1/4″ exposure, with a 30-year limited warranty on paper though the actual service life in Los Angeles sun is closer to 18 – 24 years. Heritage Vintage adds a shadow band for dimensional depth and runs 40 5/8″ – close enough that an untrained eye might miss the mismatch, but the lock lines won’t seat right and the wind rating drops.

Check the shingle back for the Tamko stamp and lot number, usually printed in black ink near the sealant strip. If that’s gone to dust, measure the exposure (the part you see from the ground) and note whether the color is solid or variegated. We carry Heritage in the standard L.A. stock colors – Rustic Slate, Weathered Wood, and Oxford Gray – and can source Vintage or Woodgate within 48 hours if the repair zone is visible from the street and the match needs to be exact. Aftermarket equivalents exist from Atlas and IKO, but for Tamko roofs still under warranty, OEM is the only way to keep that coverage intact. Crestview Roofing is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Tamko.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Curling or clawing tab edges. The asphalt core hardens after a decade of ultraviolet exposure, and the tabs pull upward like a claw. This happens fastest on south- and west-facing slopes in Los Angeles, where afternoon roof temperatures hit 160°F regularly. Once the sealant bond breaks, the next Santa Ana gust can lift the tab entirely.
  • Granule loss exposing the black asphalt mat. Those ceramic granules are the shingle’s sunscreen. When they wash off – accelerated by L.A.’s occasional hard rains on baked shingles – the mat degrades in months, not years. You’ll find the evidence in gutters or at downspout splash blocks.
  • Cracked tabs, especially near ridges or valleys. Thermal cycling causes this: 160°F days, 50°F nights, repeated thousands of times. Heritage Vintage is slightly more prone due to its thicker profile and less flexible core. Cracks let water in at the worst possible point, where multiple roof planes channel runoff.
  • Lifted or missing ridge caps. Ridge caps take the full brunt of wind and get walked on during every HVAC service call. Tamko’s pre-formed ridge accessories match the field shingle color, but they’re often substituted with generic three-tab cutouts during cheap original installs. Those cutouts fail first.
  • Interior stains that appear after rain, then dry slowly. This means water is getting past the shingle, through the felt, and finding a seam in the decking. On low-slope areas common in Los Angeles additions and patio covers, Tamko’s standard Heritage install is more vulnerable because water moves slower and has more time to find a gap.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Typical Range in Los Angeles
Single tab replacement (1 – 3 shingles) $380 – $520
Section repair (10 – 30 sq. ft., valley or wind zone) $580 – $780
Ridge cap replacement (full ridge run) $720 – $1,100
Underlayment patch where felt is degraded $180 – $340 additional

The spread depends on roof pitch, access, and how many layers we need to cut through. A steep two-story in the Hollywood Hills takes longer than a single-story ranch in Reseda. Every repair includes removal of damaged material, installation of matching Tamko shingles with proper nail placement and sealant activation, replacement of any compromised felt, and a full photo set sent to your phone before we leave. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair for a full year – if the same spot leaks or a tab lifts, we come back and fix it at no charge. Written price before any work starts, always. Every promise in writing – that’s just how we do it.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check your gutter granule load, look for missing tabs from the ground with binoculars, and photograph anything suspicious for us to review. What you shouldn’t do is walk a pitched roof to pry up shingles and check nail patterns. Los Angeles roofs are steeper than they look from the driveway, and asphalt shingles get slick with morning dew or the oils that leach out in heat. The sealant strip on a Tamko shingle activates at 140°F and bonds hard – prying a tab to inspect underneath destroys it.

We also see DIY repairs fail because the new shingle gets face-nailed instead of nailed in the adhesive strip, or because the installer didn’t loosen the tabs above to slide the replacement in properly. Those mistakes aren’t visible from the ground, but they guarantee the repair won’t hold through the next wind season. Call (325) 246-5075 and we’ll give you a written price before we touch anything.
