IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

IKO underlayment and deck repair in Los Angeles typically runs $1,800 – $4,500 for a full section replacement, depending on how much plywood decking has rotted through and whether we’re working around existing IKO Cambridge or Dynasty shingles. Most homeowners in Los Angeles who call us notice the problem after a rain – water stains on the ceiling, a soft spot when they walk the roof, or shingles that look fine but leak anyway because the layer underneath has failed. We stock IKO ArmourGard and StormShield underlayment on our trucks, and we carry CDX and OSB decking in common thicknesses so we’re not making two trips.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s two main shingle lines in Los Angeles are Cambridge – the architectural laminate – and Dynasty, the heavier premium laminate with ArmourZone reinforcement. Both rely on the same underlayment ecosystem, but the installation pattern differs. Cambridge uses a standard offset, while Dynasty’s wider nailing zone changes how we lap the underlayment at valleys and penetrations.

To identify what you’ve got, check the shingle bundle label for the series name, or look at the nail line printed on the shingle itself – Dynasty has a pronounced double-width strip. The underlayment beneath doesn’t care which shingle sits on top, but the deck repair does: Dynasty’s extra weight means we use 5/8-inch minimum plywood when we’re replacing rotted sections, not the 1/2-inch that was standard on older Los Angeles tract homes.

We install IKO’s own ArmourGard synthetic underlayment where the roof geometry allows, but we’ll spec StormShield ice-and-water shield at valleys, eaves, and penetrations – especially in the canyon neighborhoods like Laurel Canyon and Beachwood Canyon where wind-driven rain is routine. Aftermarket synthetics from Deck-Armor or RhinoRoof are compatible and sometimes faster to source, but we default to IKO-specified products to keep your system warranty intact. Crestview Roofing is an independent service provider – we’re not affiliated with IKO – and we’ll tell you honestly when the OEM part matters and when a quality equivalent won’t cost you performance.

Signs Your IKO Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling that track to a specific roof plane. This usually means the underlayment has torn or the decking has delaminated, letting water migrate along the plywood grain before it drips. The shingles above may look perfect – the failure is hidden underneath, which is why we photograph everything when we lift them.
  • Soft or spongy spots when you walk the roof. OSB and plywood decking absorb moisture once the underlayment fails, and in Los Angeles’s combination of intense sun and occasional heavy rain, that moisture cooks the adhesive between plys. By the time it feels soft, the structural integrity is compromised.
  • Shingles lifting or cupping in isolated patches. When decking rots, it loses its hold on fasteners. The shingles don’t fail – the substrate beneath them does. We see this constantly in Mid-Century neighborhoods like Eagle Rock and Highland Park where original 1/2-inch decking has hit its lifespan.
  • Granule accumulation in gutters below valley areas. Valley underlayment takes the most abuse. IKO’s StormShield is self-adhering and should seal tight, but if it was skimped during original install or baked through by reflected heat from adjacent windows, water gets underneath and starts washing granules from the shingle underside.
  • Musty smell in the attic after rain, even without visible leaks. This is the early warning. Moisture is getting through but hasn’t found a drip point yet. Catching it here means replacing underlayment and maybe a few decking sheets. Waiting means insulation, drywall, and possibly framing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, here’s what most IKO underlayment and deck repair jobs actually cost:

Scope Typical Range
Underlayment replacement only (no decking), up to 500 sq ft $1,800 – $2,800
Underlayment + partial decking (1 – 4 sheets) $2,800 – $4,000
Underlayment + extensive decking + valley rebuild $4,000 – $4,500+

What drives the range: deck thickness (5/8-inch costs more than 1/2-inch), roof pitch (steeper = slower, safer rigging), and how many layers of old material we remove. Every promise in writing – that’s just how we do it. You get a written price before we start, line-itemed between underlayment, decking, labor, and disposal. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair for a full year, including a free second visit if anything fails. We pull permits when required by Los Angeles building code and pass inspections before we invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s where it makes sense to draw the line. A homeowner can safely check attic ventilation and look for daylight through the roof deck – that’s just observation. But removing shingles to expose underlayment means walking a pitched surface, working around fascia edges, and handling materials at height. The real risk isn’t the underlayment itself; it’s the rotted decking you can’t see until you step on it. We’ve had calls in Los Angeles where a homeowner put a foot through compromised OSB and needed the fascia board replaced too.

We also see DIY underlayment installs fail because the overlap pattern at valleys and penetrations wasn’t right – IKO specifies minimum 6-inch headlaps and 4-inch sidelaps for ArmourGard, with full StormShield coverage in valleys. Miss that and you’ve got a leak waiting to happen. If you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, call (325) 246-5075 and we’ll give you a written estimate before any work starts.
