CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials across Los Angeles, with most standard repairs running $1,800 – $4,200 installed depending on deck square footage and whether we’re replacing localized water damage or full sections. Most homeowners in Los Angeles who call us notice the problem after a rare heavy rain – the January 2023 storms exposed a lot of these failures – when water spots appear on ceilings or the roof deck itself feels spongy underfoot. If you’re seeing those symptoms, the underlayment has likely been compromised for months; Los Angeles dry spells hide slow leaks until they don’t.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed underlayment systems aren’t one-size-fits-all, and matching the right membrane to your existing roof assembly matters more than most homeowners realize. We regularly work with CertainTeed’s DiamondDeck, WinterGuard, and RoofRunner synthetic underlayment lines, plus their traditional 30# and 15# asphalt felt. The synthetic products carry printed lot numbers and ASTM ratings along the roll edge; if you can safely photograph what’s visible at your roof edge, we can identify the exact product before we arrive.

Here’s where compatibility gets specific: DiamondDeck is rated for slopes as low as 2:12, but in Los Angeles we see it fail prematurely when installers use it on unventilated low-slope assemblies without the required counter-flashing detail. WinterGuard comes in two weights – the standard Sand and the thicker HT – and they’re not interchangeable on tile roofs over spaced sheathing, which is common in Mid-Century neighborhoods from Sherman Oaks to Woodland Hills. RoofRunner is the newer high-temp synthetic; it pairs with CertainTeed’s Solaris and Landmark Pro shingle lines but can delaminate if installed over wet OSB during our occasional winter construction windows.

We carry OEM CertainTeed underlayment on every truck, plus a GAF Deck-Armor equivalent and Owens Corning ProArmor that meet the same ASTM D226 and D4869 standards. For deck repair, we use actual 5/8″ CDX plywood or 7/16″ OSB with APA stamp, never the bargain sheathing that warps within two Los Angeles heat cycles. Every promise in writing – that’s just how we do it.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Ceiling stains that grow after rain, then “disappear” in dry months. The underlayment has a pinhole or seam separation that’s letting water reach the deck; Los Angeles aridity evaporates surface moisture fast, so homeowners assume the problem solved itself. It hasn’t. The deck is taking on water and rotting from the inside.
  • Soft or bouncy spots when you walk the roof perimeter. This usually means the OSB or plywood deck has delaminated. On south-facing Los Angeles exposures, we’ve measured deck temperatures hitting 165°F; that thermal cycling breaks down the adhesive in cheap sheathing, especially where the underlayment has already failed and moisture is present.
  • Shingle tabs that lift or crack in straight lines. When the deck underneath flexes, shingles stress along the unsupported edges. CertainTeed Landmark shingles are flexible enough to tolerate minor movement, but sustained deck deflection causes the adhesive strip to fail and wind to finish the job.
  • Granule accumulation in gutters below valleys or penetrations. This signals the underlayment in your valleys or around vents has degraded, allowing water to back up and scour shingle surfaces. CertainTeed’s WinterGuard is supposed to self-seal around fasteners; when it ages past 15 years in Los Angeles UV, that seal breaks down.
  • Musty attic smell that worsens on humid days. Even “dry” Los Angeles attics hit 80% relative humidity when marine layer pushes inland. Compromised underlayment lets that moisture reach insulation and deck framing. By the time you smell it, the deck repair scope has usually expanded.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Typical Range (Los Angeles) What’s Included
Localized underlayment repair (valley, penetration) $1,800 – $2,800 Remove shingles to deck, replace underlayment section, reinstall shingles, photo documentation
Deck section replacement (up to 100 sq ft) $2,400 – $3,600 Cut out damaged sheathing, install CDX/OSB, new underlayment, shingle integration, permit if required
Full underlayment replacement on existing roof $3,200 – $4,200 Complete strip to deck, new CertainTeed or equivalent underlayment, reinstall or replace shingles as needed

What drives the range: deck accessibility (steep pitches in Los Feliz or hillside homes in the Hollywood Hills add labor hours), whether we hit plywood or the older 1x skip sheathing common on 1940s Los Angeles bungalows, and how many layers we’re stripping. We deliver a written line-item price before any work starts; the number on the page is the number on the invoice. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it fails within a year, we correct it at no charge, including a free second visit.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check your attic for fresh water stains, photograph any visible underlayment branding from the roof edge with a zoom lens, and confirm whether your ceiling stains align with valleys or vent locations – all useful information that speeds up our diagnosis.

What you shouldn’t do: walk a compromised deck, pull shingles to inspect underneath, or attempt to peel and stick new underlayment over old. The deck may not support your weight where it’s rotted. More critically, WinterGuard and similar self-adhering membranes require a clean, dry, mechanically fastened substrate; Los Angeles morning dew or yesterday’s marine layer is enough to trap moisture and guarantee failure. We’ve re-done three DIY underlayment jobs in Eagle Rock and Glassell Park in the past year alone. Call (325) 246-5075 and we’ll give you a written price before we touch anything.
