CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Most CertainTeed ridge vent installations in Los Angeles run between $850 and $1,800 depending on roof length, accessibility, and whether we’re replacing a failed vent or installing fresh on a re-roof. We stock CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent on every Crestview truck, and we can typically inspect and quote same-day if you call before noon. Homeowners usually discover the problem during Santa Ana season, when hot attic air can’t escape and the AC runs nonstop, or after a rain when water sneaks through cracked end caps or lifted mesh.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes ridge vent systems under two main product families: Ridge Vent (the standard roll-style with external baffles) and Mountain Ridge (the low-profile version with internal weather filters). Both use a 10-inch minimum ridge opening, but the fastening patterns differ. Mountain Ridge requires 1.5-inch ring-shank nails at 3-inch intervals along the cap edges, while standard Ridge Vent uses standard roofing nails at 6-inch centers. Mix the two and you’ll void the wind warranty.

To identify what you’ve got, check the underside of your existing ridge cap shingle for a stamped CertainTeed logo and part number, usually near the nail line. If your roof was installed between 2005 and 2015 in Los Angeles, there’s a decent chance you’ve got the older Ridge Vent without the end-seal gaskets, those fail first in our UV exposure.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we install OEM CertainTeed ridge vent when the roof system is still under manufacturer warranty. For out-of-warranty roofs, we also carry quality aftermarket equivalents from Lomanco and Air Vent that match the 12-inch profile and NFVA (Net Free Ventilation Area) specs. The aftermarket units typically run 15-20% less, but we won’t substitute without writing it into your estimate first. Every promise in writing, that’s just how we do it.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature spikes 30+ degrees above outdoor air. In Los Angeles, a healthy ridge vent should keep your attic within 10-15 degrees of ambient. When the internal baffles collapse or the mesh clogs with dust and palm debris, convection stops dead. We see this constantly in neighborhoods below the Hollywood Hills where Santa Ana winds deposit fine grit.
  • Water stains on the ceiling directly below the ridge line. CertainTeed’s end caps rely on a compression seal against the ridge board. After 10-12 years of thermal cycling, that seal hardens and cracks, letting wind-driven rain slip underneath. The damage usually shows up first in the room closest to the prevailing wind side.
  • Shingle granules collecting in the gutters below the ridge. This means the ridge cap shingles are curling or lifting, often because the vent underneath has warped and created a hump. On south-facing ridges in Los Angeles, UV degradation accelerates this, we’ve replaced vents in Silver Lake that failed in 8 years.
  • Musty smell or visible mold in the attic during winter. A ridge vent that can’t exhale moist air traps humidity. In coastal zones like Venice or San Pedro, where marine layer keeps morning dew heavy, this turns into black mold on the underside of roof sheathing within two seasons.
  • Whistling or rattling at the ridge during Santa Ana winds. Loose fasteners or separated end caps turn the vent into a reed. The noise is annoying, but the real problem is the gap that’s letting embers and debris enter, a genuine fire risk during red-flag warnings.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Los Angeles home with 40-60 linear feet of ridge, installed replacement runs $850 – $1,400 using aftermarket equivalent vent, or $1,100 – $1,800 with OEM CertainTeed materials. Steep pitches (7/12 and above), tile or wood shake tear-off, and ridge rot repair push the upper end. Every estimate we write breaks out parts, labor, and disposal separately, the number on the page is the number on the invoice.

What’s included: removal of failed vent and cap shingles, inspection of ridge board for rot or termite damage (common in pre-1960 Los Angeles framing), installation of new vent with manufacturer-specified fasteners, new ridge cap shingles color-matched to your existing roof, and full cleanup. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, if anything fails within a year, we fix it free, including the second visit.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s exactly one safe homeowner check: from inside your attic, look for daylight streaming through the vent slot along the ridge. If you see gaps at the ends or sagging mesh, you’ve got a problem. Don’t go poking at it.

Everything else belongs to a roofer. Ridge work means working at height on the peak of your roof, handling utility knife and nail guns overhead, and diagnosing whether the failure is the vent itself or the underlying sheathing. In Los Angeles, permit requirements vary by jurisdiction, Los Angeles County requires a roofing permit for any vent replacement that involves removing more than 100 square feet of roofing material. We pull permits where required and schedule inspections so you don’t have to chase the city. Call (325) 246-5075 and we’ll get you a written price before anyone sets foot on your roof.
