CertainTeed Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Most CertainTeed shingle repairs in Los Angeles run between $450 and $1,200 installed, depending on how many shingles need replacement and whether the underlayment or flashing is involved. We stock CertainTeed Landmark, Landmark PRO, and NorthGate shingles on our trucks, along with matching ridge caps and starter strips, so we can usually complete the repair same day once we’re on site. Homeowners typically notice the problem after a Santa Ana wind event or the first hard rain of winter, when a small lifted tab turns into a visible leak or a handful of granules collecting in the gutter becomes a bare patch on the roof.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed’s three most common lines in Los Angeles are the Landmark series (standard laminate), Landmark PRO (thicker, richer color blends), and NorthGate (SBS-modified rubberized asphalt for impact resistance). Each uses slightly different dimensions and locking patterns, so matching the existing shingle matters. Landmark and Landmark PRO both measure 13.5 inches by 39.375 inches, but PRO is heavier at 250 pounds per square versus 220, and the color granule blend won’t match if you mix them. NorthGate runs 14 inches wide and has a more aggressive adhesive strip, which is why it holds up better in hail but doesn’t interlock cleanly with standard Landmark courses.
To identify what you’ve got, check the cellophane strip on the shingle back or the bundle wrapper if you have leftover stock in the garage. The manufacturing date and plant code are printed there. For anything older than 2005, you’re likely looking at the discontinued Independence or Hatteras lines, both heavier laminates with different exposure widths. We don’t need to find identical discontinued stock for a clean repair, but we do need to match the exposure and butt thickness so the new courses don’t telegraph through. We carry both OEM CertainTeed and Atlas StormMaster as a quality aftermarket alternative when color matching is tight and the homeowner wants options.
One compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Los Angeles: homeowners with a 2012-2018 Landmark install sometimes have the “Swiftstart” starter strip, which has a wider sealant band than current CertainTeed starter products. Using a standard starter as a repair piece leaves a half-inch gap at the eave that wind can grab. We check for this on every repair and carry both versions.
Signs Your CertainTeed Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Lifted or curled shingle tabs. The thermally activated sealant strip has failed, usually from age or from Los Angeles heat cycling that exceeds the asphalt’s softening point. Once the tab lifts, Santa Ana winds finish the job and drive rain underneath.
- Granule loss exposing the black asphalt mat. This is UV damage accelerated by Los Angeles sun exposure, especially on south-facing slopes. The granules are the shingle’s sunscreen; without them, the mat cracks within one to two rainy seasons.
- Cracks running across the shingle face. Thermal expansion and contraction stress the fiberglass mat, particularly on darker colors in the San Fernando Valley where roof surface temps hit 170°F. The crack starts small and propagates with every hot day.
- Missing shingles after wind. CertainTeed shingles are rated to 110 mph, but that assumes proper six-nail placement in the manufacturer’s nailing zone. We often find original installs with four nails or high nailing that misses the zone entirely, which voids the wind warranty and explains why one house loses tabs and the neighbor doesn’t.
- Water stains on the ceiling or walls. By the time you see interior damage, the shingle failure has compromised the felt underlayment or ice-and-water barrier. In Los Angeles, this usually means water has been entering through a lifted tab for multiple storms before finding a path to the drywall.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Repair Type | Typical Range (Los Angeles) |
|---|---|
| Single shingle replacement (accessible slope) | $450 – $650 |
| Multiple shingle replacement (up to 3 square feet) | $650 – $950 |
| Shingle + underlayment patch (deck exposed) | $950 – $1,200 |
| Ridge cap or hip shingle replacement (per linear foot) | $85 – $140 |
What drives the range: slope steepness (anything over 6/12 requires roof brackets and slows the crew), how many layers need removal, and whether we’re matching a discontinued color blend that requires sourcing from a specialty supplier. Every repair includes the shingles, fasteners, ice-and-water shield if the deck is exposed, and disposal. We pull a written price before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair, including a free second visit if the patch fails. Every promise in writing – that’s just how we do it.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check the gutter for granule buildup, look up from the yard for lifted tabs, and even photograph the damage for us to review. What we don’t recommend: walking a pitched roof to pry up shingles, working with a nail gun on a slope, or trying to heat-seal a lifted tab with a torch. The sealant strip requires precise reactivation temperature, and overheating destroys the asphalt. More importantly, most CertainTeed warranties require documentation of proper installation, including nail placement in the nailing zone; a DIY repair that misses this can void coverage on the entire roof.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we install to their published specs and can document the repair for any future warranty claim. If you’re unsure whether the damage is cosmetic or structural, call us. We’ll look at your photos, give you a straight answer, and if you need us, we’ll schedule a free estimate with a live trackable arrival time.
FAQs
Most CertainTeed Landmark shingles last 20 to 25 years in Los Angeles conditions, though we’ve seen premature failure at 12 to 15 years on unventilated attics in the Valley where summer roof temps exceed 160°F. NorthGate’s rubberized asphalt holds up better to thermal cycling and typically adds 3 to 5 years. Call (325) 246-5075 if you’re unsure where your roof is in that timeline – estimates are free.
A lifted tab can sometimes be resealed if the sealant is still pliable and the shingle isn’t cracked, but this is a temporary fix. Cracked, torn, or heavily granule-loss shingles need full replacement; patching the surface doesn’t restore waterproofing or wind resistance. We won’t charge you for a reseal if we can tell you honestly it’s not worth doing. Call (325) 246-5075 for an assessment.
Most repairs take two to four hours on site, including setup and cleanup. Matching a discontinued color blend can add a day for sourcing, but we stock current Landmark, Landmark PRO, and NorthGate colors on our trucks. You’ll get a live arrival window and before-and-after photos through The Relay Standard. Call (325) 246-5075 to schedule.
We stock the full Landmark, Landmark PRO, and NorthGate color lines on our service trucks, along with matching ridge caps, starter strips, and Swiftstart where needed. For discontinued colors or specialty products like Presidential Shake, we source from CertainTeed’s West Coast distribution center in Fontana, typically next-day. Call (325) 246-5075 and we’ll confirm availability for your specific color match.
