Daylight Visible Through the Attic Boards

What’s Happening

If you can see daylight through your attic boards, your roof has at least one opening where the exterior and interior of your home are no longer separated. That opening is letting in light right now, and it will let in water, cold air, heat, and pests the moment conditions are right. This is not a cosmetic issue – it’s a structural one that needs a professional look before the next rain.

The gap could be anywhere from a cracked or missing shingle to a split at a seam in the decking – the plywood or OSB layer underneath your shingles. It could also be at a flashing joint, which is the metal edging that seals around chimneys, vents, and roof valleys. Some of these openings are small but direct. Others are larger and have been there long enough that the wood around them has already started to soften. The daylight you see is the clearest sign your roof will ever give you that something needs attention. Take it seriously.

Why It Happens

Failed or Missing Shingles

Shingles take the first hit from wind, hail, and UV exposure year after year. Over time, they crack, curl at the edges, or blow off entirely – leaving the decking beneath them bare. If you look up and the daylight is coming through in a relatively small, defined spot, a missing or badly cracked shingle is the most likely cause. You may also notice granules collecting in your gutters, which is shingle material breaking down before the shingle fails completely.

Decking Rot or Damage

The decking is the structural base your shingles are nailed to. When water gets under shingles – even slowly, over months – the decking absorbs it and eventually rots. Rotted decking can crack open or collapse inward, creating gaps that go all the way through. If the daylight looks like a jagged or irregular opening rather than a clean edge, and if the wood around the gap looks dark or feels soft when you press it gently from below, you’re most likely looking at decking damage. This one tends to be more involved to fix because the decking itself has to be cut out and replaced, not just patched over.

Flashing Failure at a Roof Penetration

Anywhere something passes through your roof – a chimney, a plumbing vent, a skylight – there is a piece of metal flashing sealing that joint. Flashing is typically step flashing, counter flashing, or pipe boot material, depending on the penetration type. It can pull away from the roof as the structure expands and contracts with temperature changes, or the sealant underneath it can dry out and crack. If the daylight is visible near one of these penetrations, flashing failure is almost certainly the cause. You might also notice staining on the ceiling directly below the penetration.

Ridge or Valley Deterioration

The ridge is the peak of your roof. The valleys are the V-shaped channels where two roof slopes meet. Both areas handle more water runoff and more weather stress than the flat field of the roof. Ridge cap shingles can crack and separate. Valley flashing or valley shingles can wear through. If the daylight is coming from the very top of your attic or from along a diagonal line where two slopes meet, check those areas first. A gap at the ridge or valley will funnel water straight in rather than off to the side, so the damage tends to escalate faster than a gap in the open field of the roof.

What to Do Right Now

  • Mark the location from inside. Stand in the attic and note exactly where the daylight is entering – left side, right side, near the chimney, along the ridge. A photo with your phone is the fastest way to document it. Your local Crestview Roofing team will want to see this when they call back.
  • Do not go onto the roof. Working at height is genuinely dangerous without the right equipment and training. Even a one-story fall causes serious injury. The inspection is our job – keep both feet on the ground until a professional arrives.
  • Check the attic boards and insulation around the gap for wetness. Touch the wood around the daylight if you can reach it safely from below. Soft, dark, or damp wood tells you the opening has been there long enough for water intrusion to begin. This changes the repair scope and is important to report.
  • Move anything stored in the attic that could be damaged by water. Cardboard boxes, fabric, paper – get them out of the area directly beneath the gap. If rain is forecast before repairs can happen, a heavy plastic sheet laid loosely over that section of attic floor can limit interior damage.
  • Photograph the ceiling below, too. Staining, bubbling paint, or soft drywall on the ceiling underneath the attic gap is evidence of existing water intrusion. Document it now so there’s a clear before-and-after record once the repair is complete.

How We Fix It

When your local Crestview Roofing team arrives, the technician starts on the roof, not the paperwork. They locate the opening from above, trace it back to the source, and assess how far any water damage has traveled into the decking or framing below. Most daylight-through-the-attic calls come down to one of two services: a targeted Roof Repair – replacing failed shingles, reseating flashing, or patching a section of damaged decking – or, where the damage is widespread, a Roof Replacement conversation.

Before any work starts, you receive a written price. That number is fixed – it does not change at the invoice. Materials are sourced from manufacturers including GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, and Boral, so what goes onto your roof is manufacturer-backed quality. The repair itself is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the same issue returns within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge, no runaround. A straightforward shingle or flashing repair typically wraps in a few hours. Decking replacement takes longer, depending on how much material needs to come out.
